What it is

RWA tokenisation can represent government securities, private credit, funds, commodities, property interests or receivables. The token usually represents a contractual or beneficial interest mediated by legal entities.

The blockchain record does not by itself establish ownership enforceability. Offering documents, trust/SPV structure, custody, segregation and investor eligibility determine the actual claim.

Yield may come from the underlying asset, but fees, withholding, servicing costs and token-level expenses can reduce what holders receive.

How it works

Primary issuance/redemption can anchor token value if eligible investors can create or redeem near net asset value. Secondary markets may still trade at discounts or premiums when access is restricted.

Underlying settlement may be slower than token transfer. A 24/7 token can trade while the off-chain asset or banking system is closed, creating stale NAV and gap risk.

Oracles or administrators may publish prices. Their methodology and update frequency affect collateral use and liquidations in DeFi.

Regulatory restrictions can limit who can hold or transfer the token, reducing composability and liquidity relative to permissionless crypto assets.

Net holder yield ≈ underlying gross yield − management/servicing fees − custody/admin costs − taxes/withholding − token-level friction. Exact treatment depends on structure and jurisdiction.

Cross-checks and limitations

Legal seniority and bankruptcy treatment deserve explicit review. Two tokens referencing the same Treasury bill can offer very different protections if one represents a segregated fund interest and the other is an unsecured claim on an issuer. The underlying asset name alone does not determine holder risk.

Composability introduces another layer. Once an RWA token is used as DeFi collateral, oracle timing, liquidation rules and wrapper contracts can create losses even when the underlying asset itself is stable. Analysts should map the complete stack rather than stopping at the off-chain instrument.

Worked example and thought exercise

A token represents units in a vehicle holding short-term government bills yielding 4.5%. After 0.5% management/admin costs and 0.2% other friction, approximate pre-tax holder yield is 3.8% if the structure passes through income as expected.

If redemption is restricted to approved investors and takes two business days, the token can still trade away from NAV on weekends or during stress.
