What it is and why it matters

DEX analytics begin at pool level. The same token pair may trade across multiple pools, fee tiers and chains, each with different reserves and price impact. Aggregated token volume can hide this fragmentation.

In constant-product pools, reserves determine the price curve. In concentrated-liquidity designs, only capital positioned near the active price contributes to immediate depth. Headline TVL therefore does not equal usable liquidity.

Routers and aggregators can split one user order across several pools. Naively summing swap events can double count or misclassify routed volume if methodology does not reconstruct the economic trade.

Token mechanics matter. Transfer taxes, blacklist controls, mint authority or honeypot-style restrictions can make a chart look tradeable while exits are impaired. Analytics should be paired with contract and simulation checks.

Evidence, data quality and limitations

DEX price is local to pool state. A dashboard may show a derived USD price using a stablecoin or routed reference. If the quote token depegs, the displayed dollar price can be misleading.

New-token analytics are particularly vulnerable to spoofed metadata and duplicate contracts. The contract address should be verified before relying on pool statistics or charts.

Worked example and thought exercise

A concentrated-liquidity pool shows £10m TVL, but only £800k is positioned within 2% of the current price. A £250k market order can therefore move price much more than headline TVL suggests.

A token shows £5m daily volume, but 70% comes from two wallets repeatedly swapping back and forth. Gross volume overstates organic demand and may also inflate apparent fee generation.
