Stablecoins are commonly posted as margin for perpetuals, futures and other leveraged crypto positions. That can reduce direct collateral volatility, but it adds a second risk engine: the collateral token itself can lose value, be haircut, frozen or become unavailable precisely when margin is most needed.

What it is
Collateral is the asset a venue recognises as supporting open positions and potential losses. In a stablecoin-margined account, profit and loss may be calculated or settled in the stablecoin, while the venue marks the collateral against a reference value such as USD.
The key distinction is between trade exposure and collateral exposure. You may be directionally neutral or even profitable on the traded asset while losing account equity because the stablecoin collateral trades below its reference value.
How it works
Suppose an account holds 100,000 units of a dollar-referenced stablecoin and opens a $300,000 notional perpetual position. If the collateral is treated at $1.00, initial collateral value is $100,000 and gross notional leverage is 3×.
If the stablecoin falls to $0.95 and the venue marks collateral at market value, collateral falls to $95,000 before any trading loss. Gross leverage rises to roughly 3.16× ($300,000 ÷ $95,000). If the position is simultaneously down $10,000, account equity is lower again.
Some venues apply pre-set collateral haircuts instead of, or in addition to, live market marking. A token worth $1 in the market might count as only $0.97 for margin. Haircuts can also be changed during stress, so traders should know whether risk parameters are fixed, discretionary or automatically linked to market conditions.
Settlement design matters too. Linear contracts margined and settled in a stablecoin behave differently from coin-margined inverse contracts. Cross-margin can allow losses in one position to consume collateral supporting another, while isolated margin limits the amount allocated to a specific position.
How to analyse it
Analyse stablecoin collateral as a separate position inside the trading account. The collateral has an issuer, market price, venue treatment and liquidity profile of its own.

Stress both legs together. A useful scenario is not merely “the stablecoin drops 5%” but “the stablecoin drops 5%, the trading position loses 8%, spreads widen and the venue raises the collateral haircut.”
Where multiple eligible collateral assets exist, diversification can reduce single-token concentration, but it does not eliminate venue counterparty risk because all assets may still sit on the same exchange.
Worked example and thought exercise
A trader posts 80,000 stablecoins worth $80,000 and opens $200,000 notional of long exposure. Initial leverage is 2.5×. The stablecoin then trades at $0.96, so collateral is worth $76,800. At the same time the position loses $12,000. Ignoring fees, equity falls toward $64,800 and leverage on the unchanged $200,000 notional rises to about 3.09×.
The trader did not merely suffer a $12,000 market loss. The collateral depeg removed another $3,200 of equity and increased liquidation sensitivity.
