What it is

A meme coin derives much of its demand from culture, identity, humour and social attention rather than a contractual claim on cash flows. That does not make price random, but it changes which variables matter most.

Attention can create reflexive loops: rising price attracts social activity, which attracts new buyers, improving liquidity and further increasing price—until the loop reverses.

Because many tokens launch with small effective float, headline fully diluted valuation or market cap can be enormous relative to actual dollars available to exit.

How it works

Holder concentration matters because a few wallets can represent founders, market makers, snipers or coordinated holders. Wallet clustering and token-distribution analysis are critical.

Liquidity-pool depth and CEX order books determine slippage. A £100m market cap token with £500k of usable liquidity cannot absorb large exits near the quoted price.

Social metrics are easy to manipulate. Bot activity, paid influencers and engagement farming can mimic organic growth.

Token-contract controls such as mint authority, blacklist/freeze functions, transfer taxes or upgradeability can add technical risks that pure price charts miss.

Liquidity-to-market-cap ratio = usable two-sided liquidity ÷ circulating market cap. It is only a rough diagnostic because liquidity depth varies by price distance and venue.

Cross-checks and limitations

Float analysis should distinguish circulating supply from actually tradable supply. Tokens held by insiders, market makers, bridges, burn addresses or long-term treasuries may technically circulate but not behave like free float. Low effective float can amplify both rallies and crashes because a small marginal order sets the quoted price for a large nominal market cap.

Exit analysis should be done before entry. Estimate price impact for the intended position size under both normal and stressed liquidity, and assume that liquidity can disappear when attention reverses. The ability to buy a token easily during a rising market says little about the price at which a large position can be sold during a rush for the exit.

Worked example and thought exercise

A meme token shows £80m circulating market cap but only £600k of two-sided DEX liquidity within a reasonable price range. A £200k sell order could move price materially even though it is only 0.25% of market cap.

If the top ten non-exchange wallets control 45% of supply, apparent diversification across thousands of holders may be misleading.
