What it is
A BTC/ETH core is usually intended to provide persistent exposure to the most established parts of the crypto opportunity set. BTC is commonly treated as a monetary or scarcity-oriented network asset, while ETH adds smart-contract platform exposure and a different protocol/economic model. Those differences can justify owning both rather than treating them as substitutes.
The core decision must follow the mandate. A portfolio seeking broad liquid crypto exposure may reasonably use BTC and ETH. A mandate focused on capital preservation may not, because both can experience very large drawdowns.
Inclusion and sizing are separate questions. Choosing both assets does not answer whether the split should be 80/20, 50/50 or another ratio.
How weighting changes the portfolio
Equal weighting is simple and forces periodic rebalancing, but it gives the smaller asset more capital than a market-value approach. Market-value weighting lets relative market size determine weights and mechanically increases exposure to the asset that appreciates more. Risk-aware weighting uses volatility, drawdown or scenario contribution, but relies on estimates that can change quickly.
Equal capital is not equal risk. If ETH is more volatile than BTC, a 50/50 allocation can have more risk coming from ETH. Correlation also matters: the two assets can sell off together during crypto-wide deleveraging, limiting diversification exactly when it is most needed.
Implementation changes risk. Plain spot custody, exchange custody, staking, liquid-staking tokens and wrapped versions introduce different counterparty, smart-contract, validator and liquidity dependencies.

Worked example and thought exercise
A £100,000 core is split 50/50 between BTC and ETH. Assume BTC volatility is 50%, ETH volatility 70% and correlation 0.75. Using the two-asset variance formula, estimated portfolio volatility is about 56.2% before any model error.
The result shows why “half the money in each” is not the same as “half the risk in each.” A risk-aware portfolio would generally allocate less capital to the higher-volatility asset, all else equal.
