Sector allocation distributes capital across crypto economic themes so portfolio views are expressed at the theme level before individual token selection.

Risk-first note. Crypto sector labels overlap. A token described as AI, infrastructure or DePIN may share the same chain, liquidity and speculative factor as several other holdings, so nominal sector diversification can overstate real diversification.

What it is

A sector framework first defines the portfolio buckets, then allocates capital across them, and only afterwards selects assets within each bucket. This order prevents a collection of favourite tokens from masquerading as portfolio construction.

Possible sectors include base-layer networks, DeFi, infrastructure, gaming, tokenised real-world assets and other themes. Unlike traditional equity classifications, crypto taxonomies are not standardised: projects can change business models, span several categories or derive value from multiple activities.

The classification rule therefore needs to be documented. A multi-sector token can be assigned to its primary economic driver or split across exposures, but the method should be consistent.

How it works

Sector weights express strategic conviction while limiting thematic concentration. For example, a portfolio might cap any one speculative sector at 15% even if several attractive tokens exist within it.

Within-sector diversification and sector diversification solve different problems. Five DeFi tokens reduce single-project risk but can still fall together if protocol revenue expectations, stablecoin liquidity or on-chain activity deteriorate.

Market-cap weighting tends to concentrate a sector in its largest token. Equal weighting increases exposure to smaller names. Risk-aware weighting can moderate volatility but relies on unstable estimates and can create more turnover.

Dependencies must be mapped across sector labels. Several sectors may all depend on one base chain, oracle, bridge or stablecoin. A failure there can create a portfolio-wide shock.

Sector weight = market value of holdings assigned to that sector ÷ total portfolio value. Approximate sector return contribution = beginning sector weight × sector return for a simple single period.

Worked example and thought exercise

A £200,000 portfolio targets 15% DeFi, so the initial DeFi sleeve is £30,000. Suppose DeFi doubles while all other holdings are unchanged. The sleeve becomes £60,000 and total portfolio value becomes £230,000.

DeFi now represents about 26.1% of the portfolio, well above the original 15% target. The investor must explicitly choose whether to accept the new concentration or rebalance it.
