Speculative allocation limits cap the part of a portfolio exposed to assets or strategies with unusually high uncertainty, weak liquidity, binary catalysts or meaningful probability of permanent loss.

Risk-first note. Several small speculative positions can still create one large portfolio bet if they share the same ecosystem, liquidity source or market narrative. Control both single positions and the combined sleeve.

What it is

“Speculative” should describe risk characteristics, not whether the investor likes an asset. Examples can include very early projects, weakly traded tokens, highly concentrated ownership, unproven token economics, binary regulatory or listing catalysts, or strategies dependent on fragile leverage.

The purpose of a speculative sleeve is containment. If an 8% sleeve suffers a complete loss, the direct portfolio damage is bounded near 8% before contagion. If speculative ideas quietly become 40% of the portfolio, the same failure severity can threaten the portfolio's primary objective.

The correct ceiling depends on mandate and risk tolerance; there is no universal percentage. What matters is that the rule is decided before a new exciting idea appears.

How it works

Single-name caps limit idiosyncratic loss. Aggregate caps prevent ten “small” positions from becoming one large exposure. Cluster limits go one step further by grouping holdings that share a chain, investor base, sector or liquidity source.

Liquidity changes effective risk. A quoted 2% position in a micro-cap may be difficult to liquidate anywhere near the displayed price. Stress values should therefore apply an exit haircut rather than assuming every token can be sold at the last trade.

Large winners must be reviewed. A 2% position that rises tenfold can become a core-sized holding without a single new purchase. The investor should trim it or formally re-underwrite and reclassify it rather than allowing drift to make the decision.

Hedging does not automatically remove speculative risk. Thin derivatives, unstable correlation, funding changes or venue failure can leave large residual exposure.

Worst-case direct sleeve loss ≈ speculative sleeve weight × assumed loss severity. An 8% sleeve stressed to 100% loss produces an 8% direct portfolio loss before correlated effects.

Worked example and thought exercise

A £150,000 portfolio limits speculative assets to 8%, or £12,000, with a 2% single-name cap. Four positions of £3,000 each use the full sleeve.

One token triples to £9,000 while the other three remain at £3,000. The speculative sleeve is now £18,000 and the total portfolio is £156,000, so the sleeve has drifted to about 11.5%—above the 8% cap.

Thought exercise: if five 1% tokens all trade on the same illiquid ecosystem, why might the portfolio need a combined cluster cap below 5%?
