What it is

Pump-and-dump schemes typically involve accumulation, promotion, rapid price expansion and distribution to later buyers. Crypto’s 24/7 thin markets and social channels can make this process fast.

Low free float and concentrated holders increase susceptibility because a relatively small amount of buying can move price sharply. Reported volume may still be misleading if wash trading is present.

Promotion can involve undisclosed paid influencers, fabricated announcements, coordinated chat groups or exaggerated partnership claims. Marketing intensity should be compared with verifiable fundamental change.

How to analyse it

Measure price change against real depth and volume. A 300% move in a market with £100k of depth is economically different from the same move in a deep major asset.

Track holder transfers before and during the promotion window. Large insider deposits to exchanges while public messaging becomes aggressively bullish are a material red flag.

Compare social activity with new information. Sudden identical messaging across many accounts without a corresponding product event can suggest coordination, although it is not proof.
